Title: Rani in the Mermaid Lagoon
Author: Lisa Papademetriou
Pages: 1 - 45
Quote:
Rani had cut off her wings because she'd needed to ask the mermaids for one of their beautiful combs to save Mother Dove's egg. So in a way, she had cut off her wings to swim with mermaids.
Reaction:
After she cut off her wings, she never really fit in with the other fairies. That's why she went somewhere else. Away from the other fairies. But it was also good that she was trying to help Mother Dove save her egg. But cutting off her wings made her feel different than everyone else. She didn't like to be different because of the way the other fairies would treat her. So then she ran away and tried to fit in with the mermaids since she is a water fairy and now that she can swim, she found the Mermaid Lagoon.

Title: Vet Volunteers: Fight Life
Author: Laurie Halse Anderson
Pages: 66 - 102
Quote:
"It, its not breathing," she says. Dinky is very, very still. Gran is next to us in a flash. She quickly checks Dinky for signs of breathing and heartbeat. "Anything?" I ask. She shakes her head. "He's gone Maggie." Page 83

Reaction: Another one dead. All the puppies that are in the clinic are sick. The puppy, Dinky was the one who was sick the most. The reason why all of them are sick is because they all were bought from the farmers market. There is a guy who sells animals illegaly. Maggie and her friends are trying to find that man who was selling the puppies and try to take him to jail. He has to go to jail because it is against the law to abuse animals especially dogs. Its not right to treat animals badly when they need help the most.

Title: Vet Volunteers: Fight for Life
Author: Laurie Halse Anderson
Pages: 31 - 66
Quote:
Gran listens to the puppy's heartbeat, then calls for the oxygen mask. But before I can get to her, the puppy goes completely still. Gran feels for a pulse, then closes her eyes. She didn't find one. "I'm sorry," she says. "There was nothing we could have done to save him. The infection was too strong." Page 41
Reaction: In this part of the story, I was getting so excited and wondering what part will come up next. Unforunately, the puppy died from a very strong infection. I was shocked. Well not really shocked, but there were 7 pups and all of them had infections and all of them were really sick. So I thought one of them would die. But it's still very sad. The way the author wrote it made me feel emotional.

Title: Vet Volunteers: Fight for Life
Author: Laurie Halse Anderson
Pages: 1 - 30

Quote:
Brena leans closer to Dinky. "Maggie, this one's shaking. Is that good or bad?" I lightly rest my hand on his back. "Bad. He's probably cold.
Puppies this small get cold easily. Believe it or not, it can kill them , especially if they are already sick and malnourished. We need to keep him warm because he's probably using all his energy to fight off the infection."

Reaction:
When a puppy is malnourished, it means that the puppy wasn't nourished or fed properly. The puppy is verry sick and I feel sorry for it. Its trying so hard and using up all its energy to stay alive. But it might not have a chance to live after all the puppy has been through. The puppy was not vaccinaed and thats one of the reasons why it became sick.

Reading Log Week 3

Date 9/15/08
Title: The Witch of Blackbird Pond
Author: Elizibeth George Speare
Pages: 1 - 35
Quote:
"I don't remember my parents at all," she said to him. "My father was born on the island and was sent to England to school. He met my mother there and brought her back to Barbados with him. They only had three years together. They were both drowned on a pleasure trip to Antigua, and Grandfather and I were left alone."

Reaction:
Kit had to be raised by her grandfather and it is very sad that her parents drowned. But she did meet her aunt when she went to Wethersfield. Kit has never met her before. When she met her she treated Kit like the way her mother would treat her to make her feel more comfortable around her aunt.
